The Colorado Avalanche NHL Hockey team actually began in 1972 as part of the as part of the World Hockey Association.  The team joined the NHL in 1979 as the Quebec Nordiques.  The team acquired Joe Sakic for the 1988 season through the draft, and in 1993 acquired Peter Forsberg as well.  The team became the Colorado Avalanche in 1995 and moved to Denver.  The Avalanche in Colorado have won 2 Stanley Cups, in 1996 and 2001.
